Chicago Fire season 7 spoilers: The future of Dawson and Casey
Going into the seventh season, it’s clear that there are many questions out there — it makes sense that there would be! It’s clear that Dawson has made the decision to head down to Puerto Rico in order to assist with the relief effort, but the thing that is unclear is how the writers are going to resolve things in the long-term. As much as I’ve enjoyed the Dawsey relationship, there aren’t any indications that Monica Raymund is coming back. Therefore, there are challenges that come along with how you handle that in terms of Casey’s marriage to her. Can you continue to have Jesse Spencer on the series for years to come and keep Casey married to Dawson? It’s an interesting question.

For the time being, though, it doesn’t appear as though the plan is to split the two characters up — that’s something that show executive producer Derek Haas discussed further to TVLine, saying that the writers tried to prepare for writing stories that would exist within a world where the characters stayed together and tried to make being away from each other into something:
“A realistic thing happens sometimes when a partner in a marriage takes a long-distance job, and so then you have to deal with a new reality to your relationship. That’s what Casey’s dealing with … We actually did a lot of research about the modern long-distance relationship, and how those are dealt with and/or overcome and/or fraught with danger.”
In the long-term, the relationship can be defined or addressed in different terms if the writers so deem. For now, I am interested in seeing what the emotional toll on this is for Casey — and, in turn, how it impacts all of the Firehouse. Remember, it’s not like Dawson was just a part of his family; Firehouse 51 is one of its own.
