This Is Us season 3 will actually film scenes in Vietnam

This Is Us season 3

While it is no secret in the slightest that This Is Us season 3 is telling the story of Jack and his brother in Vietnam, there are still some surprises here.

Take, for starters, the fact that some of the cast come actually be heading to Vietnam itself to film scenes. While this may seem like a “go figure” bit of news given the story at the core of the season, there is something else to remember here — most TV shows don’t head over to foreign countries. It’s expensive and it’s also time-consuming when you have to tell so many different stories. It’s especially hard to do midway through a season when there’s already a groove on set. That’s why Blindspot often does some of its overseas filming at the start of the season before it gets to anything else.

Yet, speaking (per Deadline) at a recent event for the series, here is some of what creator Dan Fogelman had to say:

“I think that’s the plan. With Milo’s character Jack, it’s always been clear that there’s something underneath this guy that we haven’t learned about—what happened to him, what happened in his backstory … So a big part of our season, particularly for Jack, is learning that story.

“Justin’s heading there. Milo’s potentially heading there, maybe some of our other cast members.”

What is so exciting about This Is Us heading over to Vietnam is that this can be one of the most authentic representations of the country that we’ve seen on American TV in some time. For Kevin, he can explore what it’s like to be in the country in the present. Meanwhile, for Jack, there’s a chance to explore the difficult past and the Vietnam War. That has certainly been explored on television before, but not in this present era.

This Is Us will premiere season 3 on NBC at some point next month. Stay tuned for more updates!
