Designing Women reboot in the works; is there a market?

Designing Women

Well, here we go again: Another popular series from the past may be getting a new version in the near future. This time around, it’s Designing Women.

According to a new report from TVLine, original series creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason is currently working on an updated version of the classic series over at studio Sony TV, and at the moment, it is being planned to head out to the marketplace. There is no precise word as to who could be interested, but it is worth noting that the series originally aired many years ago alongside another show coming back to the air in Murphy Brown.

As for what makes this particular show different than Murphy Brown, it doesn’t feel like you can do the same Designing Women that you once did given that some of the original cast members are no longer with us. This feels more like you have to do either an updated version or just a small continuation featuring some of the characters who were a part of the original series. You are not going to get the same exact show that you once had, even if you do capture at least some of the essence that was there with the previous version of the show.

So, for the time being, consider us cautious about this, mostly because there are so many revival concepts out there that some of them could be shunned simply out of frustration that there are too many of them happening. This is one of the big trends that exists within the entertainment industry — at first, something happens that people get excited about. Then, it happens so many more times moving forward into the future that people do start to get sick of it. This is something that, at least right now, could happen with Designing Women plus many other shows.
