As we get closer to NCIS season 16 premiering this fall, we’re going to continue to ask questions when it comes to both series regulars and recurring characters — in particular, today we’re looking at the possible future of one Cyril Taft.
It’s been a little bit now since Jon Cryer surfaced on the show. He had a brief recurring arc following Gibbs being shot, and he is largely the reason Mark Harmon’s character is still alive. He’s a brilliant doctor and this role was, as a whole, a very nice departure from his Two and a Half Men role of Alan. While this character did still have some lighthearted quirks, he was serious about his work and very successful at it.
As we move forward now into season 16, there is a good case to be made to bring back Cryer — which the main reason being just how long it’s been since we’ve seen him. Beyond just that, it feels like there are some creative reasons in which the character could be involved again. Maybe he can be responsible for saving another character who turns out to be a key witness in a case, or maybe he actually needs the NCIS’ help for a matter related to his own life. It would be interesting to see Dr. Taft in danger, or in a situation where he needs Gibbs to clear his name and help him out a little bit more.
Beyond just that, it would just be a reminder that Dr. Taft is still out there and that Cryer is still a fantastic performer. He hasn’t appeared in a live-action TV series in 2018, though he recently did reunite with his former Two and a Half Men co-star Ashton Kutcher for a couple of episodes of The Ranch over on Netflix. (For those wondering, we actually think that Cryer would make a great star for an NCIS spin-off about a military hospital, but we don’t quite know if CBS is even interested in that idea.)
