Law & Order: SVU season 20: Carl Weathers to reprise Chicago Justice character
In a new post via Twitter, series star Mariska Hargitay herself confirmed that Weathers is going to be returning as Mark Jefferies, the character he played on the One Chicago spin-off for one season. This series was executive-produced by Michael Chernuchin, who is now the SVU showrunner. Consider this a happy reunion for everyone! We’re also curious to see just what Jefferies could be doing with Benson and the SVU team, given that unlike Stone, Jefferies was still in the Windy City after this past season.
Even though Chicago Justice had far too short a life on television, we have seen many of its cast members disperse onto some other series. Jon Seda is now back to being a regular over on Chicago PD, Monica Barbaro has made some PD appearances, and of course we now have Jefferies over on this show. It’s a sign that even though the series is over, that world is still a living, breathing ecosystem and there are opportunities to bring these characters back. We’re not sure that we see an SVU crossover happening with the One Chicago world anytime soon (it makes less sense now with it airing on a different night), but this is still a nice little guest spot.
One other thing we do want to point out here — Mariska is a thousand percent correct on Carl Weathers’ voice. It’s tremendous. He’s the guy you want narrating every single thing known to mankind.
Law & Order: SVU season 20 is going to be premiering on NBC come Thursday, September 27. Of course, we’re going to have some additional updates regarding the series soon — you can read some of the latest over at the link here.
