Outlander literary notes: Great American Read top 40, a cookbook, and more

OutlanderDid you know that today was National Book Lovers Day? That’s a great lead-off to tonight’s Outlander notes, which is really all about books!

For a little more on that, let’s start with some of the results from PBS’ upcoming The Great American Read. The network published earlier today a top 40 list of the 100 books that are in the running. Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series is a part of that top 40, but its specific placement was not revealed. Voting is still open from now until October 18, and you can get some more details on that over at the link here.

It is certainly an honor for Gabaldon’s work to be on this list, especially since it also includes such classics as The Lord of the Rings, Charlotte’s Web, Gone with the Wind, The Grapes of Wrath, A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, To Kill a Mockingbird, and many more. We mostly just love that PBS is doing something like this to celebrate books. While there are many great adaptations out there for many of these words (Outlander being one), none of them would be possible without the books that started it all.

Speaking of Gabaldon’s work, it just so turns out that executive producer Matthew B. Roberts is currently studying up on The Fiery Cross, the next book in the series that will be the inspiration for at least some of season 5. He recently posted a photo of him reading it on Instagram. Even though filming is not happening for a little while now, the writers room will be open long before the cast and crew return in February.

Finally, let’s wrap things up with food! It was just announced that there will be a second Outlander Kitchen cookbook coming in 2019, one that will feature even more dishes inspired by some of Gabaldon’s work. You’re going to be waiting a while to get it, but be sure to keep this in mind.
