Outlander celebrates four-year anniversary of season 1 premiere; fun facts!

Outlander season 4

August 9 is a glorious day for all American fans of Outlander — today marks the four-year anniversary since the show first premiered on Starz! It’s been an incredible journey since the early days of the show and we’re excited to be here with more coverage every single step of the way.

So what do we want to dive into today? We thought it would be fun to take a look at a number of different fun facts and tidbits to remind us of the journey that got us this far, and also where we are going to see the hit series go from here.

Now, let’s get to those fun facts…

June 1, 2013 – Outlander was officially greenlit as a series by Starz, with production slated to begin a little bit later that year.

42 – The total number of Outlander episodes that have aired so far on Starz (or, according to Douglas Adams, the meaning of life).

July 3, 2013 – The day that Sam Heughan was first announced to be playing the role of Jamie.

– The total number of countries that Outlander and its cast have filmed scenes in (United Kingdom, Czech Republic, and South Africa) since the start of the series.

September 11, 2013 – Caitriona Balfe was officially cast as Claire. There was a long search that went into finding the right performer for the role; there were also a number of screen tests with Sam to ensure that the right person was brought on board with a serious amount of chemistry.

37 – The remaining Outlander episodes that have been ordered, but not aired. Thirteen of them have already been filmed whereas the other 24 constitute seasons 5 and 6.

721,000 – The live+same-day viewership for the series premiere four years ago. This number was, of course, a mixture of book fans and viewers.

1,716,000 – The approximate live+same-day viewership for “A. Malcolm,” the most-watched episode of the entire series to date. From season 1 to around the middle of season 3, Outlander gained almost a million viewers!

November 2018 – When season 4 is set to premiere on Starz.

February 2019 – When season 5 is apparently going to begin filming in Scotland.

– The total number of Emmy nominations that the series has received, including one for its period costumes this year.

– The total number of Emmy wins. Truly appalling given the series’ greatness.

Ultimately, it’s rather funny to go back and read the reactions to the initial castings, especially compared to how beloved every performer is now! It just goes to show that despite any preconceived notions anyone may have, it’s a good idea to put trust in the casting folks behind the scenes. They really know their jobs well and have delivered incredible performers.

For those wondering… – We did come up with a fun speculative piece over the weekend about just how long the series could last on the air if one season is made for every book. Check that out at the link here.
