Outlander notes: Takeaways from Sam Heughan’s movie performance

Outlander season 4

Welcome to another edition of CarterMatt’s Outlander notes! It’s a relatively quiet time for the series at the moment, but we do have an opportunity to touch on something that we’ve been wanting to talk about the past few days: Whether or not the performance of The Spy Who Dumped Me will end up helping the upcoming fourth season based on the box-office totals and reception.

When you look at the box office for the weekend, it’s respectable in that movie brought in more than $12 million for the weekend — it didn’t soar over expectations, but it definitely did make an imprint. The movie is fairly low-budget in comparison to some other summer studio movies, so there’s a chance it can make back its production budget in US box office receipts alone depending on how things go the next few weeks.

We do think that the impact of the movie will help Sam, and in turn help Outlander, but we actually think that the larger impact is probably going to come via the extensive media tour that he went on with stops in three different American cities plus a number of morning and late-night talk shows. This was a chance to showcase his personality and talk a little bit about the show and the film at the same time. This is the thing that we believe to have the strongest impact on the show itself to bring in new viewers that may not have heard of Outlander or Sam. That may change even more once The Spy Who Dumped Me hits the home video and streaming market … and we also feel like it will end up on Starz in due time since the film and the network have a significant connection through Lionsgate.

Really, we won’t know the true impact of the film on Outlander until some of the consolidated ratings come out for season 4, which is likely not going to happen right away. The live ratings well tell a tale of general enthusiasm, but given how many people watch early on the Starz app it’s hard for them to get a full picture of the series’ success.
