America’s Got Talent: Flau’jae gets Chris Hardwick’s Golden Buzzer

America's Got Talent

The final Golden Buzzer of America’s Got Talent season 13 came to us tonight via guest judge Chris Hardwick. Last season, he chose to pick a singer in Angelica Hale; would he go in a different direction this time around? We certainly hoped that he would.

While technically Flau’Jae is still in the music industry, we certainly think that she’s a very different performer from Angelica. She is an emotional, inspirational rapper who has a lot of talent, but also is trying to create different lyrics than what you’re going to hear on the radio.

Hip-hop music is a difficult thing to craft effectively, mostly because only a part of it is about your ability. It also has to do with your writing, your stage presence, and the connection that you have to the audience. It’s also about being able to create a compelling personality so that people do care about your story and who you are. This song was called “I Can’t Lose,” and it was all about her attempts to come back after everything that she has been through. You could tell at the end of it she was getting emotional, but she still persevered through the very end, and then got the Golden Buzzer from Chris Hardwick on the other side of it.

We do think that Flau’Jae has a really good chance of making it a round or two on America’s Got Talent — we don’t think that she’s a winner favorite right away, but she’s an interesting wild card moving forward.

Now, we’ve got the entire field of Golden Buzzer set — the live shows start on Tuesday, and hopefully at some point over the coming days we’ll get a good sense as to what the lineup is going to be.
