Outlander notes: The latest via Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, Laura Donnelly

Laura Donnelly and Caitriona Balfe

Welcome to another edition of our CarterMatt Outlander notes! Even though we may be deep in the Droughtlander right now, there’s certainly still a lot to discuss.

Let’s actually kick off today’s edition with the actress behind Jenny in Laura Donnelly, who has had quite the incredible year thanks to some of her work in the theater. She’s won awards for her work in The Ferryman, a play that has some deeply personal connections to her own family history. Beyond that, she made appearances on the Starz series and we’re sure that there are more to come.

Laura did a really fantastic interview with the Independent recently out of Ireland, one where she discusses her family story, her theater work, and also her work on Outlander — which she feels has done an exceptional job of touching on how assault and trauma impacts everyone, regardless of gender or background:

“[The series] has brought up so many questions around male sexual assault, around representation, around how women are treated on screen, about love and whether you can represent love when it contains misogyny or abuse,” she says, proudly.

“Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire, is an incredibly intelligent, articulate feminist, and she holds her position of responsibility very seriously. She knows what she does matters, and she fights for things. She fights stuff that she thinks is careless or irresponsible.”

This is wonderful, effusive praise that Donnelly has for Balfe, and we have seen much of that reflected in Caitriona’s words and actions away from the show. We imagine that this will continue in the months to come as there remains many subjects worth fighting for.

On a lighter note…

Balfe recently saw Sam Heughan’s new movie The Spy Who Dumped Me (now in theaters), and offered up a few words of praise on the subject via her Twitter account. Take a look at those below.

Meanwhile, for Sam there is a new video ad featuring him for Barbour, the fashion company in which he has a signature collection for. He’s been involved with Barbour for some time now, so it’s likely that this is not the first ad you’ve seen him in.
