Outlander season 4 first impressions: Colin McFarlane as Ulysses
Recently, we wrote about our very first impression of Maria Doyle Kennedy and her character of Aunt Jocasta on the series. Today, meanwhile, we come bearing a little more discussion on the subject of Colin McFarlane as Ulysses. You can see in in the background of the photo above, and while you would think on the surface that this doesn’t give a whole lot away, at the same time we do think that there are a couple of takeaways from what we saw.
Let’s start with this: Ulysses being outside of the River Run home with Jocasta Cameron to greet Jamie and Claire Fraser. This is significant in that he is a valuable part of that household. He is a part of the first greeting with Jamie and Claire Fraser; he is someone who Jocasta clearly wants to be there.
Of course, with this said it’s significant that he is standing behind her. This is recognition that she is the one in charge of the house and there needs to be a perception that he is serving her. Given the time period in which the show is set, Ulysses would likely be perceived as a slave. Yet, those who know the books and his story are well aware that his situation is a little more complicated; he is at River Run willingly, mostly because of the affection that he has for Jocasta and the understanding that even if he was freed, he could be enslaved somewhere else so long as he remained in North Carolina.

This photo is a recognition in some ways of the affection that Jocasta has for him, albeit not in an explicit way. He serves as her butler in title (one of the higher positions within the household) and is very well-dressed. Understanding this character and learning his history is one of the many things that we are excited for moving into season 4. There are, after all, so many more complicated people and relationships that we are set to see starting this November.
