The Affair season 4 episode 9 preview: What happened to Alison

Next week, The Affair season 4 episode 9 is going to air on Showtime and with that, we have a promise for answers. What really happened to Alison? (Spoilers ahead.)

Tonight, we learned that the character tragically died as a result of an apparent suicide. The evidence for that is clearly there, as the police investigated it and she showed all of the markings of someone who threw herself into the rocks and then drowned to death.

Below, The Affair season 4 episode 9 synopsis gives you a small tease for what’s coming:

“Ben finally confesses the truth to Alison. But is it too late for their relationship?”

Like we said, this is a small tease. The folks over at Showtime are being extremely cautious at the moment when it comes to what they’re willing to give away and for good reason. This is understandably one of the most difficult arcs that we’ve seen on the series to date.

To answer the question in the synopsis, yes, it’s too late for their relationship. What we’re left to wonder here is mostly how Alison died and whether or not it is really as cut-and-dry as it seems. We do think that, at the moment, it’s hard to make the case for Ben killing her unless there’s something about him we don’t know or something about the conversation that they had — such as Alison threatening to destroy his entire life. Ben didn’t know her all that long, as he noted to Noah and Cole, and with that, his life wasn’t tethered too much to hers. Maybe there is something more to this story, but even if there isn’t, we do still think there is going to be a fantastic performance from Ruth Wilson that helps to send her off — provided that she doesn’t appear forever as a ghost.
