Yellowstone season 1 ratings back over 2 million; the series’ staying power
Wednesday night’s new episode tied a season high with a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic; to go along with that, it also drew over 2.1 million viewers. These are nice increases from the week prior, and they certainly validate the renewal more than ever. This is a show that has been on a nice tear, and it is one that we also foresee continuing for some time to come.
What’s the biggest reason for the success of Yellowstone at present? We’d probably say it is the difference between it and just about every show on TV. Viewers often like to watch something that they cannot find anywhere else, and that is the secret sauce to what is being offered here. It is a chance to dive into a world and characters that are not anywhere else; add to this the support for series star Kevin Costner, who hadn’t had a major hit in a little while before this, and you’ve got a show that has cracked the formula and could stick around for a little while — at least if it retains most of its audience year-to-year.
For the rest of the season, we feel fairly confident that Yellowstone is going to keep winning. The next major test for the show will likely come next year when season 2 premieres — that’s when we will learn if there is really staying power here. The best thing that the Paramount Network can do is premiere it at the same time, air the same number of episodes, and just establish a pattern. While we don’t know if the show is ever going to substantially increase its viewership so that there are 4 million people watching live every week, it can keep what it has going on for a little while moving into the future.
