Crime Dynamic Duos 2018: Absentia (Emily / Nick) vs. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Jake / Amy)

Crime Dynamic Duos

Welcome to CarterMatt’s Crime Dynamic Duos 2018! This is the third year in which we’re doing this tournament, which is a way to honor some of the best crime-solvers in all of TV. This tournament runs throughout the month of August, and over the course of it we describe what makes certain pairs the perfect crime-fighting duo while also allowing you to share some of your thoughts on the matter! Each article is accompanied with a description and a poll; the winning duo will advance to the next round leading up to the winner being announced on September 1!

What are the rules of the tournament? Basically, all eligible shows have to still be in the midst of their run on TV as of August 1, and at least one character involved needs to be involved in solving crimes in some capacity. They can be a cop, a private investigator, a federal agent, a lawyer or a high-ranking officer. What matters is that they put plenty of bad people away.

Voting Rules – Vote however often you like! Voting for Round 1 is open until Friday, August 10 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific time. Round 2 will begin the following day; the image at the top of the article should explain everything.

In this article, the focus is on Emily and Nick of Absentia versus Jake and Amy of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. These are two shows that really couldn’t be more different, but that is a big part of the fun here.

Emily and Nick, Absentia (#4 seed) – After a strong performance in the TV Madness poll series earlier this year we’ve given Absentia a higher seed here, and we’re certainly curious to see how Emily and Nick fare given that they are one of the more adversarial pairs on this list. While we do think Nick came around in the end, it took a long time for him to get there with his former wife. The two certainly worked against each other just as much as they worked for each other in season 1, but their relationship was really at the heart of the show and a representation of the life Emily lost. Going into season 2, we certainly are curious to see just what more could be explored here — especially with Emily being reinstated again as an agent.

Jake and Amy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine (#5 seed) – Meanwhile, this year we also wanted to give the newly married duo a little bit of love, especially since we are also a married couple that works together too so we understand some of the dynamics that goes with that. They’ve also been through pretty much everything a partnership can go through, whether it be time apart, excessive time together, hijinks, embarrassment, and being constantly ridiculed by everyone else within the Nine-Nine. Jake improvises too much and Amy often is someone that follows the rules, but with their powers combined they’ve established themselves as more than capable of getting the job done. While Absentia features two characters who were together before splitting apart, here we have two characters who ended up coming together.

Your take

I can’t see the poll; what do I do? – If you are on mobile, scroll to the bottom of the page and click to view the non-AMP version. If that does not work, give the poll a moment to load! On some mobile browsers, it may take a moment.

How can I vote more than once? – If you are having trouble casting multiple votes, try switching your browser, your device, or visiting the page under private browsing or incognito mode. There should be many handy guides online explaining how to do so if interested.
