The Four season 3 renewal: Should it happen over at Fox?

The Four season 2

Following tonight’s finale, should The Four season 3 happen? Let’s do our best in order to try and break that down a little bit in this piece!

Let’s start things off here with this: At the moment, Fox has yet to confirm a decision one way or another on the competition show, which aired its first season this winter and came back this summer with another batch of episodes. We understand the need for content in the summer, especially since scripted content doesn’t always work well (this summer has been especially lean!). Yet, at the same time we don’t really love the fact that Fox put the second season on so early. There were likely some people who weren’t aware that the series is back and beyond that, it may have just over-saturated a market that was already chock full of all sorts of competition shows. Remember here that we already have two seasons of The Voice on a year plus also America’s Got Talent and American Idol. We know that The Four isn’t the same musically as those shows, but it is still a lot as far as music competitions go.

Here is the thing when it comes to the ratings: Season 2 averaged a 0.8 in the 18-49 demographic, and that isn’t terrible by most measurements in the summer. However, at the same exact time it’s down a good 33% versus the first season. If that trend continues for season 3, the ratings would make it a flop. Fox has to figure out a way to stabilize the ratings if they want to continue the show in some form. We’d just move it back to the winter and keep it there — two seasons a year for a show like this is a little bit much.

Hopefully, there will be some more plans announced regarding the future of The Four at some point soon — if you love the show, know there’s at least a chance at a comeback. We just don’t think that it’s a guarantee.
