ALF reboot reportedly in development at Warner Bros. TV

ALF reboot

Everybody hide your cats! It looks as though an ALF reboot could actually be on the way.

According to a new report via TVLine, it appears as though Warner Bros. TV is working behind the scenes on a new version of the classic sitcom, which featured the puppet in the late 1980’s. The show was very popular at one point on NBC, and even since then it has gone on to remain a pop-culture mainstay. We’ve heard scuttlebutt about a possible ALF revival for years now, so we can’t exactly say we’re shocked that WBTV is looking to actually make a serious move with this right now.

Of course, there are still so many different steps that need to be taken in order to get this show back on the air. For starters, you have to find a writer, as the involvement of original creator Paul Fusco is unclear. Beyond that, you need to find some sort of new premise to explain why in the world anyone needs ALF in 2018. You then need a good cast and a network that is very supportive of the property. Netflix, for example, has ventured into re-booted sitcom territory and we wonder if they would be keen to do a somewhat-darker version of the story. Meanwhile, NBC could remain an interesting candidate to get the show back that they already do have a revival on the air in Will & Grace.

Just because there are talks around a revival doesn’t mean one will happen — for example, it’s looking as though a Mad About You revival may not end up finding a home despite it being pitched to a number of different outlets. In principle, we’re okay with reboots / revivals if there is some sort of relevant reason for them. We’re just not sure that there is a need in 2018 for ALF, just because times are so different and this character was a perfect byproduct of that particular era. It would take an extremely talented writer to make this work in the present.
