Outlander season 4 first impressions: Ed Speleers as Stephen Bonnet
One of the most prominent new faces seen within this teaser is Ed Speleers as the character Stephen Bonnet, someone who will likely go down as one of the most-hated people in the entire history of the series. Like Black Jack Randall, he is a character who you are meant to loathe; however, the difference here is that some of Bonnet’s malice and horror is hidden at first glance.
The image above is one of the best glimpses that there is of him in the season 4 teaser, and upon looking at that alone, you would not necessarily guess that Bonnet is so vile. He looks like he could be an older brother of Young Ian, though his actions clearly show otherwise. He’s someone who knows his way around the high seas but can also be a scoundrel on land. He’s manipulative, and knows how to appeal to someone.

We don’t want to give away too much within this article, especially since there is no guarantee that the books and the show are going to align identically when it comes to the story. Yet, we know that Bonnet is involved in one of the series’ most-gruesome scenes involving Brianna, and that appears to still be a part of the series. Before that an action Jamie takes allows Bonnet to be in that position down the line — he had no way in which to predict that or that Bonnet was so loathsome a character. We just wonder just how much guilt or pain could be factored into Sam Heughan’s performance as a part of all of this?
Bonnet’s presence is one to watch for throughout the entirety of season 4, and we know from Downton Abbey that Speleers is capable of playing fascinating, multifaceted characters. You may hate Stephen with every fabric of your being, but even if you do there is a reasonably good chance you will still be talking about him.
