Elementary season 6 episode 12 review: Hope for Joan’s adoption plan

Elementary

Tonight, Elementary season 6 episode 12 spent a good bit of time making us wonder one simple question: Why can’t Joan Watson get a win? Is that really so hard?

After all, most of tonight’s episode featured Lucy Liu’s character in the midst of a struggle to get approved for adoption. It felt like she was ready to get proper approval by the agency; however, the adoption lawyer made a number of mistakes that caused her to get what she wanted. She debated as to whether or not she wanted to take legal action against the lawyer, who refused to admit to wrongdoing so that she could move forward in a hasty manner.

While it wasn’t the case of the week, Sherlock Holmes still took action in an attempt to help make sure that she got what she deserved — and that included giving her an opportunity to use an old acquaintance of his other in order to ensure that her lawyer Gary had to help her — otherwise, he would find himself out of a job. Joan went to Gary with the information that she had extracted from Sherlock’s friend and with that, she has a chance to move forward and get a little bit closer to adoption.

While we know that this doesn’t mean Joan is an adoptive parent just yet, the resolution of the Gary story effectively means that she is another step closer.

As for the case of the week…

This one was fairly fascinating since it revolved around the poisoning of a man who was secretly a contract killer and had spent quite some time living a double life. With this, there were of course many people who were potentially eager to kill him, but at the same time nothing was anywhere near easy to resolve.

What the NYPD had to figure out here was how far the murder victim had gone in order to keep his double life secret, but then also who could have found out the truth about him. This was a difficult case to resolve given that it required help from federal law enforcement in order to figure out who was responsible.

While this was a very compelling case, it was hard to really focus on it too much given the massive distraction that was there in the form of Detective Bell’s imminent departure. We know that it is coming and with that, we kept looking over our shoulder seeing him on screen tonight.

CarterMatt Verdict

Overall, we would consider season 6 episode 12 to be a good episode of the show when it comes to delivering some good character stories for Joan and Sherlock. We appreciate these moments that show how much Holmes cares about her and this was one of the best examples that we’ve seen of it.
