Is Dakota Blue Richards leaving Endeavour following the events of the season 5 finale on PBS? Alas, the news is true, as it was first revealed earlier this year.
As for the reason why we are losing Trewlove right now, much of that has to do with Richards’ own wishes to move on and do some other things. Speaking to the Radio Times, executive producer Damien Timmer said the following about it:
“This is the end of Trewlove for now – Dakota told us she wanted to leave at the beginning of last year, so we planned series five to give her the arc with Fancy and build to his demise and her leaving.”
Is losing Richards a big deal to the series? Certainly, given that she was a big part of the past couple of years. Yet, we do think that Timmer and the writers have had a considerable amount of time to plan for this and figure out the right way for the show to move forward.
Losing Richards at the moment is really emblematic of what is a fairly major trend when it comes to British series as a whole: Actors don’t necessarily stick around all that long. They operate on a little bit of a different system in that performers don’t sign these extensive six-year deals that they do in America. They come and go a little more regularly and if someone is interested in moving on to other things, you’re better off letting them go. You don’t want to hold anyone to a job when they would rather be doing something else, and we certainly do think there are many big roles coming for Richards still. She’s already done a lot in a fairly short period of time.
