NCIS season 16 spotlight: What lies ahead for Kasie Hines?

In this week’s NCIS spotlight, we’re happy to put the focus on someone we’re really still getting to know: Kasie Hines. Diona Reasonover is now a series regular and, really, it’s easy to be thrilled with that. We were very concerned with how hard it was going to be to replace Abby but, ultimately, the writers and Reasonover both did a good job with this. Kasie’s introduction felt as organic as possible and nobody forced the character too hard in the early going. They didn’t try to make Kasie into Abby 2.0 and gave her a little bit of time to breathe.

Also, we actually think it helped that the character wasn’t promoted to full-time right away. That gave the writers a little bit of flexibility, and that probably also alleviated some of the pressure that came with the part

Now that she’s a full-time member of the team, it’s time to get to know her! We’ve assembled a few different ideas below.

1. The first spotlight episode – These are important for just about every single character on the show, and we certainly know that Abby had plenty. This should come for Kasie reasonably early in season 16, but we also wouldn’t do it right away. Give her a little bit of time in order to get acquainted with the rest of the team as a full-time member of the staff, and for viewers to get to know more of her style and interests. Maybe around the start of November sweeps, give her a case where she can be the hero on — or at least have some sort of connection to.

2. What’s her life outside of work? – One of the things that we always lamented with Abby is that producers waited so long to show you her apartment — we do want to know more about Kasie’s background and her friends fairly early on. We’d compare our desired trajectory with her to that of Clayton Reeves, beyond of course the part in which they are killed off.

3. More scenes with Ducky – Given that these two have a preexisting relationship, we do want to see that explored. Plus, it’s a great way to get David McCallum involved in the series without just having Ducky down in the morgue.

4. Form a close friendship with at least one character – We’d love to see Kasie develop a deep friendship with at least one member of the team (save for Ducky), that way when the two share screen time it’s even more special. How about Kasie and Sloane? What could be fun about that is that they could bond over being relative newcomers.
