Poldark season 4 finale: Should George finally learn the truth?
For the sake of this particular CarterMatt article let’s keep the focus squarely on George Warleggan and his current state of mind entering this final episode of the year. For most of the season, it felt as though the biggest point of contention on his marriage was finally at bay: Whether or not Valentine was actually his. While we knew that this story was always brimming underneath the surface, we personally were very much inclined to think that George had accepted what Elizabeth had told him and was ready to move on.
Then, Geoffrey Charles came along and threw a grenade into the mix — at least a metaphorical one. Making a bold proclamation that Valentine looks almost identical to Ross is the sort of thing that immediately puts George back on edge and questioning everything. As a result of that, Elizabeth could go so far as to induce labor early in the finale, mostly to prove that she has a tendency for earlier births to make George feel like Valentine does belong to him.
Yet, should George learn the truth about Valentine in the finale? We do think that it is time for the series to make a decision one way or another.
The case for the big reveal – The easy argument in the show doing this is mostly that it ignites the Ross vs. George feud in a way that we haven’t seen to date, and that would be an excellent cliffhanger moving forward. Also, it creates a larger rift between George and his wife, who has been desperate to keep him from learning the truth.
The case against it – Technically, we don’t think that Poldark really needs to execute this sort of drama moving forward. While we know that they could get some mileage out of, is there really value in watching George mistreat Valentine for no fault of his own?
We can understand why Poldark could want to go either direction with the George story, but we just hope that they pick a road before the end of the season. That way, we have a better sense of where they are going with season 5.
