The Night Of season 2 may still happen, though there’s no movement yet
At the moment, it’s understandable to have some sort of hope that we could see the show again. More than likely it wouldn’t be the same as season 1, and there’s no guarantee that you would see any of the same characters again. Yet, there’s clearly room for some more stories like what we saw the first go-around — also, it’s been so long since the first season that it doesn’t just feel like HBO is forcing another story out there for the sake of doing more. They’ve given the show some breathing room and we do think that’s valuable to its success.
So what exactly is the network waiting on when it comes to make more episodes? Much of that has to do with the availability of show co-creator Steve Zaillian and also him waiting to have a good idea for what’s next. Speaking (per IndieWire) while at the network’s Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour event this week, he had the following to say:
“Steve is a little bit like Larry David, he will come to us when he’s ready … For a creative executive, that’s a nice feeling because if Steve is saying ‘I’ve got it,’ I know he has it. So we’re giving him his time and he’ll come to us when he’s found it.”
It also probably helps HBO that there’s no real reason to hurry anything — they have Game of Thrones coming next year plus also new seasons of Big Little Lies and True Detective. They also recently announced the Deadwood movie is on the horizon and there is a Game of Thrones prequel series being planned alongside a Westworld season 3. Basically, what we’re trying to say here is that there’s enough great content at the network that another season of The Night Of isn’t a necessity right now.
