Madam Secretary season 5: Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell to appear

Madam Secretary

We teased last week that there was a big Madam Secretary season 5 announcement coming — now, it’s official: Hillary Clinton is appearing.

Today, CBS confirmed that Clinton, Colin Powell, and Madeleine Albright are all going to be appearing on the upcoming premiere episode, as Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni) is going to look towards a number of people who previously held the position for advice. This is not the first time that Albright has appeared on the show, but for Powell and Clinton, this is something totally new.

In a statement, show executive producer Barbara Hall had the following to say:

“We’re delighted to have these three former secretaries of state be part of our season premiere … It was a privilege to experience their perspectives and discourse both in and behind the scenes.”

Meanwhile, fellow EP Lori McCreary added the following:

“Having three powerhouses of diplomacy agree to come on our show is awe-inspiring and humbling. And that we were able to find a time in their busy schedules when they were all available is a miracle,” said Lori McCreary, Executive Producer. “We welcome Secretary Albright, Secretary Clinton and General Powell to the MADAM SECRETARY family!”

It feels pretty fair to say that this is big news, no? It’s something that the show clearly looking at as a way of bringing more attention to itself, but we don’t mind given that it is something that will bring so much more authenticity to a series that does try to create a real environment for its characters. Madam Secretary has often worked to be a fascinating, non-partisan look at international politics, and having these three on board a single episode is a good way to present a wide array of different perspectives.

Remember that Madam Secretary season 5 will premiere in early October and this episode suddenly feels like a must-watch.
