Tuesday night’s new America’s Got Talent episode is right around the corner, and with that, so is a chance to see Sophie Fatu once more on the show.
If you remember, Sophie had a very memorable first audition performing “My Way” by Frank Sinatra. She’s the youngest singer on the show this season, and of course with that, there’s a lot of “aww” factor that comes with seeing her like you would get watching an episode of Little Big Shots.
We’ll be honest here: Before actually watching Sophie perform “New York, New York” in the video below (via TV Guide), we were ready to write a piece questioning why someone so young is on the show. It’s rather difficult to judge someone who is only five years old, since you do have to be so careful in your criticism and the last thing that you should want to do is make a little kid cry on national television. We are still worried about that depending on how far she goes, given that it’s hard to imagine Sophie winning the whole competition.
Yet, we will say that Sophie’s performance here is much better than we would have predicted it to be going into the show. While there is a certain part of her performance that is extremely reliant upon her age and the appeal of seeing a kid sing Frank Sinatra, she actually does hit some of the big notes at the end and it doesn’t feel like she’s being directed every single second by a parent off-stage. We do get the sense that Sophie really does love what she’s doing, even if she may not actually be old enough in order to actually understand exactly what winning $1 million really means. On the basis of talent, we do give her a shot at making it to the next round. If she continues singing for the next ten years, she could be a serious force to be reckoned with.
We do think that if she makes it to the next round, maybe she could get at least some votes from families watching the show together. Other parents with little children may find her particularly appealing and she could have some young fans out there.
