The Good Doctor season 3: Early hope for a renewal at ABC

While it is technically far too early to give any assurances that The Good Doctor season 3 is going to happen over at ABC there is a reason to have hope that this will become a reality.

If you think back to the 2017-18 TV season, there are two shows that we would label as runaway successes no matter the definition: The Good Doctor as well as 911 over on Fox. These shows delivered good ratings from the start, lifted timeslot averages, and effectively inspired a great deal of confidence that network TV is far from dead. What was especially impressive about their performances was that neither one of them exists as a part of some sort of larger franchise. They didn’t have some sort of enormous built-in following and almost everything they achieved they did so on their own merit.

With The Good Doctor, one of the biggest reasons to feel confident about a season 3 comes via the critical acclaim. When you look at most of ABC’s roster, you don’t have too many drama series generating awards-show buzz right now. While Freddie Highmore may have been snubbed of an Emmy nomination, that doesn’t take away from his performance as Dr. Shaun Murphy, or from the notion that he could get some love in the future. with the possibility of this show having a really good chance at snagging some awards it basically means that in the event The Good Doctor ends up on the bubble for some reason, ABC is going to be inclined to support it more with a renewal … not that we really think that there is some enormous reason to be worried about its future in the first place.

The second reason for confidence just comes via the ratings themselves. The first season averaged overall a 1.8 rating and also close to 10 million viewers. If the show even retains 75% of these figures moving into season 2 (though we hope that it will be more than that), we certainly think that the odds of a season 3 renewal are going to be pretty darn high.

With all of this in mind, keep watching The Good Doctor live in season 2 — but don’t worry all that much about the long-term future.
