MacGyver season 3 spotlight: The future for Matty Webber
What is rather wonderful about Meredith Eaton’s character as a whole is the simple fact that, for everything we know about the character, there are still many things we don’t. There is such an air of mystery with her and many questions that still need to be answered. There’s obviously the big one about her history with Jack, but in some ways we kind of like that this has never been fully fleshed out since it adds to the fun.
What we do want to know more about when it comes to Matty is what some of her specific training was like that brought her to this point in her career. What was her initial training like, why did she get so involved in law enforcement, and what about her life made her think that she would be perfect for this? Personality-wise, we also want to know if she always had these sort of leadership skills. It would be fun to meet some of Matty’s early mentors and see some of the lessons that they passed down to her. Also, we’d love to see if Matty has a history of doing a lot of undercover field work.
On a more personal level, we of course want to know the instances in which Matty was vulnerable — was there someone she loved or someone close to her she lost during her career? What about exploring even more of her life before that? We feel like there are certain cracks that can be filled in while still leaving the mystery there with Jack, and with MacGyver doing 22-episode seasons there are plenty of opportunities in order to give us at least a couple of Matty spotlight episodes a season.
Finally, let’s bring things towards the present and try to focus in a little bit on what’s going on in regards to how working with the Phoenix Foundation is changing Matty as a person. Is this giving her an opportunity to be more open and receptive to new ideas, and is it changing how she looks at her life outside of work? We like the idea of Matty having a chance to have a very different life outside of work than she does at the Phoenix, and it would be fun to get some opportunities to explore that. We know that Eaton has the range to pull off anything the writers throw at her, whether it be fun material or something a little more dramatic and heartfelt.
