Code Black season 4: Current renewal hopes; how could it come back?

As we get closer to the finale airing on CBS, it does feel like the timing is right to discuss Code Black season 4 and its renewal possibilities one last time.

For starters, we should remind everyone that technically, the network has already canceled the show. They made that decision earlier this year, and we certainly do remain frustrated by it given that it felt as though the Marcia Gay Harden – Rob Lowe series had a lot left in the talk. It was performing fairly well in the ratings (it has won many Wednesday nights in total viewers!), it had a loyal fanbase, and it also managed to find a way to continually deliver stories that were different than other medical dramas out there.

In some ways, it still remains baffling how it could be ending … but is there still hope? We know that showrunner Michael Seitzman has said that he has an idea for a fourth season if he ever gets a chance to make it, and that’s something hopeful that many people out there can cling to. Beyond just that, there’s also the idea that if the ratings are strong for the final episode, maybe that’s the thing that either makes CBS reconsider or generates interest from another network. We still don’t understand why ABC isn’t chomping at the bit to pick the show up, especially with its lack of high-rated scripted programming in the summer. Pair it with Take Two (if it gets renewed) and you’ve got a pretty solid lineup that you could build around there. (Code Black hails from ABC Studios in part, which is one of the reasons why we continue to bring it up as a reasonable possibility.)

For now, it appears as though the odds of a Code Black season 4 are slim at best, but in the world of TV where so many things are getting revived now, we do think it’s still worthwhile to have a never-say-never sort of philosophy.
