Animal Kingdom season 3 episode 9 preview: Is Billy wrecking the family?
At the end of episode 8, we saw Denis Leary’s character make a confession to Deran about why he (supposedly) left, and how it had to do with threats that Smurf made against him. Should he be believed? That’s certainly a question that Deran should ask himself moving forward — though really, it’s something that may already be on his mind. It feels clear to us that Billy is trying to wrangle his way into the family by turning some of the boys on the others, and this could be setting up a war between him and Smurf later on this season. Billy is a louse, but he is driving some interesting conflict and we’re very much interested in seeing how this plays out.
Below, the Animal Kingdom season 3 episode 9 synopsis offers up some more information as to what’s coming next:
A decision from Deran’s (Jake Weary) past comes back to haunt him. J (Finn Cole) works to get back into Smurf’s (Ellen Barkin) good graces as she tries to take away his control over the family business. As he learns more about the Cody dynamics, Billy (Denis Leary) uses his past with Smurf to his advantage.
So long as you enjoy good, meaty character drama, it feels like there’s a lot still to enjoy moving forward on Animal Kingdom season 3. We don’t think that we’re going to see anything on the level of the weed job we saw tonight in the near future, but so long as the drama and the performances are great, we don’t actually think that this really matters all that much. The show at this point knows its strengths alongside some of the best ways to emphasize them.
