Shadowhunters season 3 episode 21 filming: What lies ahead

This week, work is going to intensify on Shadowhunters season 3 episode 21, which, for those curious, is one of the final two episodes of the season. Many of the cast members have to be working on very little sleep at this point. A number of them were in Toronto last week to start work before flying out to Milan for a convention before going back to Toronto to make sure that production could get going without any problems.

Basically, they deserve all the praise in the world for their commitment to their fans.

So what’s going to happen from here on out this month? Over the next several weeks, we expect some fun behind-the-scenes teases of work on some of these episodes. They probably won’t take too long to film, but it’s going to be a very different emotional process for everyone involved. Everyone has to wrap filming this time around knowing that the series is currently canceled, and that’s difficult given that in some ways, it constitutes a goodbye. Hopefully a season 4 pickup will happen somewhere and that goodbye can feel a little less heart-wrenching, but if we were a cast member we’d prepare as though it’s the end to ensure we got closure, one way or another. This has been a long journey for many of them that has lasted many years. We know that Harry Shum Jr. has experienced a phenomenon before being a part of Glee, but for many of these cast members this is show marks the first time that they’ve been on a hit show or in the public eye. Even for Shum Shadowhunters is very different than Glee and his character of Magnus is beloved for a number of different reasons. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will last in their minds forever.

As for when these final episodes will air, as of right now there is no firm premiere date — though all signs point towards Freeform airing them in early 2019. Personally, we’d love to see them happen before then, but it feels like the network is committed to airing the second half of season 3 with these two episodes being filmed now. Because of that, it’s hard to really premiere them in the months ahead, especially with these two episodes needing still to be filmed.

While production is underway, continue to keep fighting using the #SaveShadowhunters hashtag and making sure that your voice is heard. You never know what can happen, and we’ve certainly seen the power of fandom in many different ways already.
