Criminal Minds season 14: Why 300th episode is so special

Criminal Minds

The Criminal Minds season 14 premiere is airing in early October on CBS, and just in case you really needed another reminder that the first episode is special, here it is: The 300th episode will be the very first installment of the entire season!

So why is this so important? Here’s your reminder that getting to episode #300 is basically being in the most rarified air possible. Harry Bring posted more proof of that in a post on Twitter, which really emphasizes a note from showrunner Erica Messer. As she notes, Criminal Minds is the 18th longest-running primetime scripted show in history. That is crazy, especially in a climate now where viewers are more fickle than ever and it is increasingly hard to get anyone to watch programming for some sort of substantial period of time. Often, the best thing that you can really hope for these days is a few seasons so that you can lay the groundwork for your show and try to get people hooked.

We know that the 300th episode odes have one principal task in trying to ensure that the cliffhanger from season finale (and it’s a big one) ends up being resolved. On the other side of that, the challenge then becomes finding a way in which to include some of the characters in another epic story. While we don’t necessarily need for there to be returning cast members per se, it would be nice for us to get to see a few callbacks to the history of the series. Criminal Minds has come a long way since the very beginning, and in many ways it is rather amazing that there are still a few people around who were there in the beginning.

Also, let’s hope that the Criminal Minds season premiere sets up something amazing that can be paid off over the course of the remainder of the season. We prefer seasons that have some sort of epic story that you can watch unfold over time.
