Timeless movie: What is taking NBC so long on decision?

Timeless season 2

If you’ve been following the movement to save Timeless for a while now, you’ve likely witnessed a number of the different steps that have been taken. Take, for example, the initial cancellation by NBC, and then also the super-sad news that another network / streaming service has failed to come up to the plate when it comes to giving the series a season 3.

Now, we’re left in limbo in order to see whether or not NBC will give the show a movie, and it feels like we’ve already been waiting for a long time for that, all things considered. There are plans for a helicopter to fly over San Diego Comic-Con and, beyond that, more campaigns. There’s just not much action on NBC’s part just yet and that is a dire shame.

Does Timeless deserve more than a movie? Absolutely, but we’re absolutely going to be happy to get a movie over not having anything at all. We know already why NBC may be dragging their feet on a decision here — mostly, money. Executive producer Shawn Ryan has said on Twitter in the past that a standard episode of Timeless costs around $4 million an episode, which means that, in turn, a movie would probably cost around $8 million. This just isn’t an easy show to make in between the performers, the costumes, the sets, and all of the effects plus paying all of the standard crew members for their work. $8 million is a LOT of money so it’s hard to sit here and just shout at NBC / demand for them to pay for a project that we really want to see.

However, at the same exact time we do think ordering a Timeless movie is one of the few ways that NBC can still extract some goodwill from this situation. We know that technically, they already un-canceled the series once, but after talk of a movie first started to dangle out there, how can you ignore the prospect of it? If nothing else, it’s a chance to give fans closure — if a season 3 happens down the road, that’s wonderful. If not, at least we know that Rufus is alive and well.
