How This Is Us season 3 plots to make a more likable Miguel

This Is Us season 2

Will we root for Miguel on This Is Us season 3? We know that this is a question that many people have out there, mostly because he is one of the few characters on the series that is actually somewhat polarizing. What makes it all the more interesting is that he’s polarizing mostly just because of the position that he is in rather than anything that the man actually did.

Just think about things this way for a moment: The worst thing that Miguel has ever done is find a way to care for Rebecca in the years that followed Jack’s death. There was nothing going on beforehand and we certainly do not think that Miguel first started getting close to her for the sake of romance. He was just trying to be there in the best way that he knew how and Rebecca started to feel close to him.

As for how the story with Miguel is going to be moving along as we get into the season, that is something that executive producer Dan Fogelman did his best to try and discuss more in a new interview with Deadline:

“When we’re picking up that particular storyline, [with] the teenage kids, we’re picking it up pretty immediately a couple of months after their father’s death. You’re seeing the beginning of a storyline where Miguel starts trying to help this family along, this character who has always been polarizing … I think last season, people actually started to love him, and then started to hate themselves for loving him. But then, they gradually figured out that this guy really has done nothing untoward and is a guy trying to do the right thing.

“We’re going to dive deeper into that this season and begin this long play of making people actually start rooting for Miguel in a serious way, which I think will be really exciting when we pull it off.”

The new season of This Is Us will premiere this fall and we imagine that more and more now, Jon Huertas (who is fantastic in the part) will have a larger presence onscreen. For those wondering, though, we do still expect that there are going to be plenty of storylines for Jack this season. After all, we know that the series is exploring Vietnam further.
