Outlander hiatus: What are the best TV roles for Richard Rankin?
Yesterday, we kicked off a new series that we are going to be doing over the next few weeks, as we do our best to offer up some determinations as to what some of the cast members should do in terms of TV gigs during the Droughtlander hiatus. Yesterday, specifically wrote about Caitriona Balfe; now, we’re shifting things over to a man in Richard Rankin we’d love to see a whole lot more of on American television! He’s a versatile performer who can take on a number of different things, so our goal for this article was to think of four different shows that could allow him to do a role that doesn’t have all that much in common with Roger. (We’re not thinking so much as to whether or not these gigs are actually feasible schedule-wise; this is just a fun exercise in creativity.)
True Detective – Wouldn’t it be interesting to see Rankin play a hard-nosed cop who falls on some hard times, or a tortured witness to a crime who is still trying to escape that trauma. While we know that Outlander has many a dark moment, this could give Rankin a chance to play a part that is especially gritty and haunted.
The Flash – On a completely different note, there’d be something very fun about seeing Rankin do something in the comic-book vein, such as playing a recurring villain on this lighthearted superhero show. We think he’d be a rather interesting variation of The Folded Man, a villain who can move about through different dimensions and manipulate them in part to suit his will.
This Is Us – Rankin is really great at doing soft, tender scenes even in the midst of a lot of intensity swirling around him. If we were going to have some fun with a theory, we’d say this: What if it turned out that Jack’s brother wasn’t actually dead, and that he actually had a son? Rankin could play that son and we’d be game to see him alongside Justin Hartley any day of the week.
Doctor Who – There were actually some rumors about him being the Thirteenth Doctor way back when! They weren’t exactly true, but it’d still be fun to see him stop by as someone Jodie Whittaker runs into through her travels in space in time. It would also allow him a chance to remain in the UK during his hiatus.
