Outlander hiatus: Wishlist for ideal Caitriona Balfe roles

Caitriona Balfe

Admittedly, the past few days have been extremely busy on the Outlander front, but we are starting to settle in now to a Droughtlander both in terms of new episodes and in terms of filming! There’s probably going to be a little less when it comes to news during that period and with that, we’ve got a few fun little features planned to get you through!

One series that we’ll be doing sporadically is this: While we wait for some of the cast to get back to work on season 5 in February, what are some other roles they could take on? We know that there are going to be plenty of opportunities out there for many of them, and that includes the subject of our piece here in Caitriona Balfe. As a matter of fact, we already know that she has a film gig planned that could take up some of her hiatus, but we like to think that there’s a chance to see and enjoy her in some other sort of TV series, as well.

With that in mind, we’ve come up with four possible shows and role suggestions that would be perfect for a Caitriona guest spot! Note that we’re just making all of this up, so we’re not sure if any of it would work in terms of scheduling. These are just some of the roles we’d love to see from her during the hiatus.

The Good Place – We think getting to see Caitriona in a really silly comedy would be a lot of fun, especially one as sharply-written as this one. She could play everyone from a friend of Kristen Bell’s Eleanor to someone who fancies Chidi in the new universe that he finds himself in after the end of season 2. In general, though, seeing Balfe in a comedy with this much snark would be a delight. (We don’t want to say too much here in the event you’re behind!)

Suits – Why not bring in Balfe as a complicated, challenging corporate lawyer who is ready to challenge Harvey Specter and Louis Litt at just about every turn? Suits is great at getting quality guest stars — just look at the likes of Michelle Fairley, Wendel Pierce, or new series regular Amanda Schull? It would be great to see Caitriona in a modern role with this sort of energy, one that is very much different from anything she does as Claire.

The Affair – If Caitriona wanted to stay in premium cable, The Affair is one of the best relationship dramas on TV with incredibly rich material. It’s the sort of show where one episode can give you Emmy-worthy material, and this could be the best show for Caitriona to make the most of her limited time in order to get awards-show recognition. Why not bring her on board as a spiritual guide who dramatically alters Cole’s thinking or a friend who tries to put Alison on a solid path?

Vikings – Why not find a way to cast Caitriona as a warrior of sorts? This would be clearly the best route if she wants something more action-oriented — as a bonus, working on the History series would allow her to spend some time in her home country of Ireland.
