Beyond NCIS season 16, what’s the series’ long-term future?

As we look ahead to NCIS season 16, there are certainly many questions to wonder about what lies ahead. Yet, there are also questions still to ponder beyond that.

Take, for example, the long-term future of the CBS franchise. At the moment, the show is only renewed officially for one more season. Are there plans to continue it beyond that? Certainly so, with much of it stemming back to the contract status of some of the actors. We know that there are multiple cast members who already have deals through season 17, even though CBS hasn’t officially renewed the show for that span of time. Yet, given that CBS TV Studios and the network are owned by the same people, negotiations for a season 17 may not prove to be altogether difficult.

Also, there’s the simple fact of the show’s ratings. NCIS remains one of the most-popular series that CBS has to offer, with it routinely drawing huge viewer totals both in America and in other parts of the world. Is it clear that it’s not the ratings force that it once has? Absolutely. The numbers are down over the past few seasons; yet, the same goes for many other network shows, and even with the declines NCIS remains a tremendous force whether it be new episodes or repeats.

For the time being, we maintain the same perspective on NCIS that we had the last time that we visited the discussion of the series’ future last summer: It will go for however long the cast and producers want it to. If Mark Harmon ever decides to leave, we could see the show’s future being in a little bit of jeopardy then. Otherwise, we’re not altogether afraid that the show is going to be going anywhere in the near future. It remains too popular and is too much of a money machine. Plus, creatively it feels pretty clear that there are still many interesting stories still to tell.
