Sharp Objects: HBO’s new thriller is going to be a wild ride
Amy Adams plays Camille Preaker, a reporter recently discharged from a psychiatric hospital. She returns to her hometown, trying to solve the murder of two young girls, all the while trying to overcome her own psychological problems. Plagued by the death of her sister years ago, Camille returns home where her mother, Adora (Patricia Clarkson) turns her away. It’s clear right away that their estranged relationship is going to be a main focus along with her half-sister, Amma. While cordial it appears the two aren’t close.
The trailer continues on to say that the two girls’ murders has the whole town riled up as they try and find the monster that would harm two children. Camille continues to do her job, but her mother’s ever conscience rule over her makes all the more difficult. Her mother’s sinister personality even affects Amma and it appears as though their shared hatred of the town brings the two sisters closer. In addition, to Camille’s family drama, her demons come back to the surface to cause her more harm.
The trailer flashes to many scenes throughout the series that show the audience that the closer Camille gets to solving the mystery the more it will lead to a dark place.
Overall, the trailer captured our attention fast and while we didn’t fully understand everything that was going on, it makes us all the more intrigued. Adora and Amma’a mother/daughter relationship intrigues us because while Camille’s is strained, hers isn’t. And the death of Camille’s sister interest us because we want to know what happened and why it haunts Camille so much. There are many parts of this show the trailer didn’t show and we’re sure we would be intrigued even more. Thrillers like this are also great to show because there’s so much mystery that it makes it hard to guess at what is going to happen, and people like that. Fans like when they are surprised and kept guessing because it means they will continue to show. In our opinion, this show as all the potential to do this.
