Power season 5 reaction: The reason for Dre’s survival
So what caused things all to fall apart? It really comes down to the fact that Ghost seemed to assume that Tariq would fall in line, and not have his own associations or agendas. After all, this entire crisis was really escalated because of Ghost’s son warning Dre that an attack was coming — that’s the only reason that he is still alive, and this is a variable that nobody anticipated going into the plan to take him out.
So why was this omission made? Speaking to TVLine, Kemp notes that some of the main characters “didn’t take it into account, Tariq as a player.” Why is that? Because of his age. They didn’t think of him as his own separate entity, capable of thinking and creating for himself. The irony here is that much of this independence is something that he learned from Kanan, and yet with this move Tariq was going against Kanan and everyone else. Kanan may not be the easiest person in the known world to trust, but for now he seems relatively entrenched on working with Ghost and Tommy. They all do have some motivation when it comes to trying to take this guy out.
As for whether or not Tariq finds himself in so deep that he becomes a target much like Dre and some of his minions … let’s just say that we can envision a situation where, by the end of this season, Ghost’s son gets caught in the crossfire much in the way Raina did. Yet, in this case, he is a little more responsible for his own doom.
