The Walking Dead season 9 will focus significantly on rebuilding

Walking Dead season 8

When The Walking Dead season 9 comes onto AMC, rebuilding is going to be the name of the game — even more so than warfare. The upcoming batch of episodes are starting off in a strange place, at least for many viewers who know that at some point, Lauren Cohan and Andrew Lincoln are going to leave. Much of the mystery comes in figuring out precisely how that is going to happen — this is a show with a lot of death at the center of it, and with that, the early expectation that we would have would be that terrible things will happen to them.

Yet, in the end it still doesn’t feel as though death is really the #1 focus of this upcoming season — and neither is destruction. In the aftermath of the All Out War storyline, it seems as though making an actual life is going to be the new focus. Speaking within a new Skybound mailbag, here is what one particular insider had to say on the subject:

“While some of the communities will experience more growth, each one still has a lot of work to do… Those civilization blocks [Georgie] gave to Maggie will definitely play into the rebuilding of the Hilltop and beyond… We will see a lot more rebuilding than the typical altercations between communities. Our heroes will also be on the road a lot more than recent seasons.”

We’ve heard the latter statement before, if for no other reason than that the focus here really seems to be trying to figure out what else is out there in the world and if there is actually a chance to make this new civilization a warmer, better, and healthier place. We do think that zombies and violence will remain a part of the show — they always are — but there does need to be something different coming up from what we’ve seen before. After all, if we were just getting more of the same The Walking Dead could struggle to find a new purpose entering what feels very much like a new era.
