The Walking Dead season 9: Chandler Riggs on Andrew Lincoln’s exit

Walking Dead season 8

Andrew Lincoln’s exit from The Walking Dead is still a sad subject for many people out there, largely due to the simple fact that it’s not something many people want. It’s painful. It’s also felt like producers should have kept Carl alive had they know that Lincoln would be departing, but that didn’t happen. Now, we’re looking at a future in which Judith is the only surviving member of the Grimes family and that is a weird thing to think about.

As sad as we are about Lincoln’s exit, there is another perspective that we could take on it — and it just so happens to be one that Chandler Riggs points out at Fandemic Tour Sacramento recently (per ComicBook.com)

“I mean, honestly, he’s had to leave his family — he lives in England and we shoot in Georgia — and he’s had to leave his family every year for weeks and weeks at a time … And when we started the show, he just had a new kid — they’re like 10 and seven, I think, right now — so the entire time that he’s been on the show, he hasn’t been able to raise his kids full time. So honestly, I think his family is gonna be pretty happy that he’s gonna be back at home and be able to be with them full time.”

Family can be a pretty big motivating factor to leave a job, especially since Lincoln has already made a great deal of money playing Rick and there are always movies that he can do moving forward. The real joy that could come with doing some of those is that he can set more of his own schedule in terms of when he wants to work and when he doesn’t. Things are a little bit easier for him in that regard and we’re sure that he appreciates that.

As of right now, all signs point to Lincoln doing about six or so episodes before saying farewell to The Walking Dead. While the series doesn’t necessarily have to kill Rick off, it really does not feel like there’s another way in which they can tell this story. How can they do it and justify not focusing on him anymore?
