Quick Hits: Champions canceled; The Sinner teaser Watchmen casts Aquaman star
We’ve got a few different stories to chronicle in this edition of Quick Hits, but let’s kick things off with some rather-sad news for Champions fans — the series isn’t coming back. NBC formally canceled the series, one of their last remaining decisions from this past season, on Friday.
We don’t mean this as overly disrespectful — this was a funny series that had a lot of potential — but it felt like the writing was on the wall here the moment that NBC burned off the final episodes on a Friday. Deadline reports that there was some talk about the series moving elsewhere, and such a thing is still possible; however, with cast contracts expiring this week they would have to be signed to new deals.
If there is some more news that comes out on this subject, we’ll absolutely let you know.
As for some more news…
New The Sinner teaser
While this doesn’t necessarily reveal too much in the way of new information for those who have been following along with recent teasers, it’s still pretty darn significant. The new season, premiering on August 1, is going to once again follow a mystery where the killer is (apparently) clear; yet, there is still a mystery as to why the murder happened. The killer this time around seems to be a young boy who poisoned his parents. Harry Ambrose has his work cut out for him this time…
Watchmen books Aquaman star
Just one day after it was announced that Sleepy Hollow star Tom Mison would be joining the show, we’re now hearing that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman) is going to be another major character on the series, which comes via Damon Lindelof of Lost and The Leftovers. HBO is being extremely hush-hush when it comes to details about many of these different characters, which is certainly something that they can do given that there’s no real reason for them to hurry things along. If Watchmen ends up becoming a series (it’s only a pilot right now), we don’t foresee it airing until 2020 or later.
