Star Trek: Discovery season 2: Major Crimes alum James Duff signs on
Just in case Star Trek: Discovery season 2 wanted another bit of veteran showrunner presence behind the scenes, it’s got that courtesy of James Duff.
According to a report from Deadline, the former showrunner for The Closer and its spin-off Major Crimes has signed on to assist showrunner Alex Kurtzman with running the writers room for the upcoming batch of episodes. He will also be listed as an executive producer.
There has been a lot of behind-the-scenes upheaval already with Star Trek: Discovery season 2, as Kurtzman recently stepped in for outgoing showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts. There was already some controversy regarding their exit.
Duff has some experience within the Star Trek franchise, having written an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise in “Fortunate Son” back in 2001. Some of his other credits include Popular, Felicity, and Wolf Lake. We definitely think that a show like Star Trek: Discovery could benefit significantly from a writer of Duff’s caliber — and we say that even though there is one really big thing we would’ve changed about the final season of Major Crimes. He’s absolutely proven himself through having two enormously-successful series in an era when most people are lucky to have just one.
Star Trek: Discovery season 2 should premiere at some point in the new year, and remember that there could be some other surprises coming via the franchise. Remember that Kurtzman recently signed an extension that could allow him to develop some other projects within this world. There is a chance that it could mean some other spin-offs, and if he is looking for another showrunner, Duff could be an interesting candidate.
For now, though, let’s just see what happens with the latest batch of episodes.
