Take Two episode 2 review: Sam Swift’s new arrangement
Yet, in the early going of this episode it was also pretty clear that she was not exactly getting some of the work that she actually wanted out of the job. She found out at the start of this episode that being a private investigator contains a lot of boring, time-consuming work … or at least it seemed that way until there was a shooting inside the home they were told to watch, and that it appeared as though the man they were checking out had killed a woman believed to be his mistress.
Yet, this case was another reminder that within the world of crime TV, nothing is as simple as it appears. It turns out that this mistress wasn’t who she claimed to be and this was a set-up where this guy was poised to just take the fall. The case itself was fairly by-the-numbers, which shouldn’t come as a shock given that this is a fairly by-the-numbers show where eventually, the responsible party is uncovered after a few twists. The fun of Take Two comes via how the characters make it to that point, including A) Sam and Eddie getting trapped in a closet at one point and B) Sam wearing a ridiculous disguise at one point to serve as a distraction while Eddie went into an office building. All of this was fun, lighthearted, and captivating — exactly what we want out of this show.
Given Eddie’s superficial disdain for Sam, though, it was also clear that the writers need to figure out some other sort of way in which to sell her sticking around and working for him. With that in mind, they introduced the court sentence. After Sam lost track of time working on her case, she missed her court date. Eddie stood up for her as someone really trying to get her life together and because of that, she was sentenced to remain in his employ for six months rather than going to jail for violating her probation. It looks like these two are going to be working together for some time!
CarterMatt Verdict
While this show can be at times snarky and cynical, there was something really sweet about seeing Sam be so excited to have her own office at the end of the episode — it symbolized that she had found her true calling and there was happiness in that. There is an earnest quality in Take Two that we appreciate and while it may not be bringing much of anything new to the table, that doesn’t make the end product any less entertaining overall.
