Shadowhunters’ Alisha Wainwright joins Netflix’s Raising Dion series
Today, Netflix announced in a statement that Alisha Wainwright, who plays Maia on Shadowhunters, is set to appear as one of the leads-in this sci-fi drama as the character of Nicole Reese. Her character is described as “a former professional dancer who gave it up to raise her son Dion when her husband Mark died. Although Nicole is completely overwhelmed by raising her son alone while dealing with the loss of her husband, she is still effortlessly cool and maintains a positive outlook on life for Dion. As Dion’s abilities become more and more apparent, Nicole’s protective nature heightens as she starts to fear for his safety.”
To go along with these castings, newcomer Ja’Siah Young is set to play Dion while Michael B. Jordan is set to play Mark. Jason Ritter and Jazmyn Simon help to round out a pretty fantastic cast across the board.
So what does this casting mean in terms of Maia’s own future on Shadowhunters? We know that there are two more episodes ordered beyond the upcoming ten episodes of season 3 that were filmed earlier this year. Depending on what happens with Maia within the upcoming ten episodes (the character will return after departing in the midseason finale), we would imagine that she’ll have a presence in the two that are set to conclude the show on Freeform.
Beyond that though, the future really depends on Maia’s availability and if Shadowhunters finds a new home. If it does, things could get a little trickier schedule-wise. We do think that there are ways to make it work so that she could appear on both shows, but her appearances on Shadowhunters may have to be more limited depending on when the two shows film.
For now, though, let’s just focus on getting Shadowhunters a new home so that there’s potentially room to even have this problem. For now, we’re thrilled for Wainwright since this sounds like a tremendous opportunity for her to work with some other great actors.
