America’s Got Talent: Should Brody Ray have received Golden Buzzer?

America's Got Talent

Who was Heidi Klum’s Golden Buzzer act on America’s Got Talent this season? That was something that we were waiting the entire show to find out! Klum is the only judge with a golden buzzer left, and we wondered what sort of talent it would take for her to push it. Here’s a quick recap — save for Tyra Banks, every performer to get the golden buzzer has been a singer. Heck, that can be said for the entire last season or so since this trend was the same in season 12.

So who ended up getting it in the end? Well, nobody. The featured act tonight was a singer named Brody Ray who carried with him quite a powerful story. We also have a ton of respect for his courage and his story — he’s a transgender singer with a little bit of country in his voice. We could imagine him doing rock, country, pop, or a little bit of all three. His voice actually sounds reminiscent of Ryan Key’s, formerly of Yellowcard. He has a good chance of making it fairly far in this competition.

Yet, there was no Golden Buzzer at the end of this episode. we expected one, but apparently there’s going to be another audition show for that to happen a little bit later this season.

As powerful as Brody’s story is, we do think what matters most here is his talent — this is a talent competition, after all, and we don’t want to make Brody into someone who is just about his story. He can really sing, and beyond that he’s got a story to tell and that could be effective in the months to come. We do think that Simon Cowell is right in the end here — he really should be doing original music since that particular point of view could be what carries him far moving forward.
