Should Outlander season 4 air over the course of the holidays?

Outlander

Ever since Starz first made it official that Outlander season 4 was set to premiere in November, CarterMatt has written a few articles talking about how their schedule could vary depending on whether or not the network decides to air episodes over the course of Christmas and New Year’s. There are many different networks out there that choose to try and take some of those days off, largely because there are (understandably) fewer viewers around.

What we want to discuss in today’s feature, though, is a little different: Whether or not Starz should air episodes of Outlander throughout December and into January. At the time in which season 4 gets around to this time, we could be as many as seven or eight episodes into the run — that’s close to the home stretch! Christmas falls this year on a Tuesday, so if Starz decides to not do a hiatus, that would mean new episodes on December 23 and December 30. From our vantage point, that could work out quite perfectly. You can keep the show on the air without having to air directly on the holidays themselves and avoid pretty much all other competition.

Does it really even matter though, if Outlander did air on Christmas or New Year’s Day? It’s an interesting thing to think about, given that even if fewer people watching live, they would still likely get many of these people watching later in the week via the app, On Demand, or the DVR. It probably would not matter all that much if the goal here is just trying to get viewers. From one vantage point, it could even help the series simply because there really isn’t all that much in the way of programming out there at around that time.

Yet, we think it’s still more likely that Starz chooses to take Outlander season 4 off the air for December 23 and 30, bringing it back for new episodes on January 6. More than likely, they don’t want to risk having less press around those episodes — or, potentially also having fewer live ratings. They don’t technically matter that much for a network like Starz that is subscription based, but they do still look good in the press releases.
