Is Alec Baldwin the casting director now of Saturday Night Live, or is he just relishing spending his summer trolling Melania Trump? Either way, his latest comments via Twitter (which CarterMatt has for you to see below) have sparked more conversation.
In a recent post on Twitter Friday, Baldwin (known for playing Donald Trump these days on Saturday Night Live) extended an invite for her to do the show … provided that she meet some conditions, of course. This invitation comes days after all sorts of controversy surrounding Melania, and while the statement got headlines, it’s almost certain to never happen.
For starters, SNL has steered clear of bringing on board many people associated with Trump since he infamously hosted the show back during his campaign. To go along with that, we’re not entirely sure Melania would ever want to do the show after she’s been mocked routinely (portrayed by Cecily Strong).
Baldwin’s really just speaking in jest at this point, but it’s an effective way to drum up support indirectly for his portrayal of Trump — there’s also likely a recognition on his part that if Melania were to ever come on board, it would probably lead to some enormous ratings for SNL. For now though, we actually feel like the series is better off steering clear from politics as a whole — the show was funny long before it relied as much on mocking a single Administration as it is now. We’re not saying this from a political standpoint; instead, it’s more that if you tell the same joke too many times, it starts to lose its impact. There is so much Trump mockery out there now that it’s hard to find a fresh take. Occasionally SNL gets a good one, but there are also a number of by-the-numbers political sketches that are forgettable.
Do you think there is ever a chance that this could happen? Be sure to share right now in the attached comments!
