There are a couple of different stories on The Affair season 4 that we want to point out within this piece, starting with the fact that you can watch the premiere episode online.
As Showtime often does for many of their scripted properties, they have put the first episode up over on their official YouTube channel. It’s a way to get hooked again on the series again after such a long hiatus — hopefully, it’s also a way for them to court some more subscribers. We’ve always thought of it as a reasonably smart idea to do something like this. We also do think that The Affair could use a sizable bump in the ratings after the first episode drew less than 500,000 live viewers — a drop of more than 20% from the season 3 premiere. We know that there are many people these days who watch after the fact, but that sort of drop for a show following a polarizing third season isn’t great.
The fourth season did get off to a pretty great start last week, and based on what we’re seeing when it comes episode 2, there are reasons to be hopeful for what’s next. For one, Cole’s trying to take a big step forward within the restaurant business. In a sneak peek that you can see over here, Cole is taking meetings on the future of the Lobster Roll, including having some discussions with some restaurant groups. (The name IHOP is even mentioned, though we personally would’ve found it rather hilarious if they had dubbed in IHOB after the fact due to recent headlines.) Cole isn’t altogether pleased with Alison showing up late. It’s good to at least see her, though, after she was MIA for the premiere episode. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as though she is in a particularly good place, and this could be a major part of her story as we push forward into the rest of the season.
