America’s Got Talent video: Meet Troy James, creepy contortionist

America's Got Talent

What’s coming up on America’s Got Talent Tuesday night? Let’s just say that Troy James has quite the unique ability you won’t see anywhere else.

James introduces himself in the video below as a guy who works in human resources — he comes across as quite mild-mannered and kind, but then you see his act and it’s something very unexpected (or at least it wouldn’t be if NBC didn’t give it away in the title of the video). James is an excellent contortionist, and the style and manner in which he twists his body around is exceptionally creepy. This is a guy who is clearly out to establish himself as someone perfect for horror movies and someone who is very different from other contortionists you’ve seen. This isn’t campy, as we’ve seen from other contortionists in the past. Instead, this is more along the lines of creepy.

One of the things that we really like the most about what Troy brings to the table here is that he’s gutsy. He isn’t afraid to wander down to Simon Cowell and perform his super-creepy act right in front of him. It takes a lot of guts and confidence to do something like that and we’re rather-thrilled that he was willing to give that a go.

As much as Troy freaks people out, to us it feels like a given that he goes onto the next round. With that, the question that we wonder is rather simple: Where does he go from here? We think that the element of surprise is now gone, so we’d almost like to see him do A) either a really specific stunt using his contortion, like fitting himself into a small space or doing something else involving the judges, or B) something that is a little bit more akin to dance. We’ve certainly seen this incorporated into a number of dance styles over time.
