Poldark season 4 episode 3: Max Bennett sets up Monk Adderley
So how does Max Bennett perceive this character? Speaking in a new interview with What’s On TV, the actor behind the role has the following to say:
“Winston Graham describes him in the novel as a wild, worthless rake. He’s a noted duellist and a noted lover. He’s also a great provocateur. Monk’s bored with his life so he likes to work out what people’s buttons are and push them, and Ross is one of those people.
“Monk’s not from money, he’s worked his way up to where he is, and he’s a successful military man. In fact, he’s of a similar background to Ross. He’s the dark reflection of Ross and they both recognise that in each other and there’s an innate animosity between them. George is always going to be the main rival but Monk certainly rubs Ross up the wrong way. And, yes, there might be a duel!”
Who doesn’t want to see a duel? Basically, it feels as though there are zero disadvantages to this character coming on board the series at this particular time. It also certainly would not hurt Poldark to have some different villains. While we understand that Ossie Whitworth is as evil as they come, he is hardly a sort of super-fun villain to watch given that he just has a tendency to be abusive and disgusting. Monk may also have his unseemly qualities, but at least he doesn’t seem to be that right now — let’s just see if that actually holds true when the series airs.
