True Detective season 4: Should anyone be thinking about it already?
On the surface, we understand that the question is fairly ridiculous to ask. Season 3 filming is still underway, and it is probably not going to premiere until at some point in 2019. However, with most shows you do start thinking about the future while you are working on the current batch of episodes.
With that being said, it is also pretty darn clear that True Detective is not your ordinary program. The anthology series has already been on a very long hiatus following the second season, and it feels like a big reason for that is a desire to really get the material right this time around. The reviews for season two were far from kind, and our personal opinion is that one of the biggest problems was that it felt like it was a rushed-together idea meant to capture the tone in the essence of the first season. In doing that, however, it didn’t have much of a soul of its own. Each one of these seasons needs to have a cohesive idea at the center of it. That one simply felt too complicated.
The problems with season two, and one of the reasons that we are somewhat nervous when it comes to season 4, is that it may have been thought about too early. You don’t want to take your eye off the metaphorical ball while making season 3, unless of course you have a really good idea that you feel like needs to be written down on immediately. Otherwise, it really just feels like something that can wait. You do not know right now what the reception to season 3 is going to be, and it is dangerous to just assume that it will be extremely well-received and that will lead to another batch of episodes. There may not be a renewal for more of this show. So, while we would understand Nic Pizzolatto and the rest of the team over at HBO starting to look at head towards what could come next, there’s really no hurry. One of the great luxuries of working with HBO is the simple fact that they can be very patient when it comes to their programming. They often either want it done right, or they won’t do it at all.

Season 3 has a lot of potential, in between its setting of the Ozarks and a fantastic cast led by Mahershala Ali. Like season 1, it is being told across similar several time periods. It really seems like season 1 is the model as a whole, but season 3 is not necessarily trying to replicate it from start to finish. This is a season with some room to breathe.
